a brief description of the building
client: coop switzerland
coop shopping centre with tenants
gross floor surface: 13'000 m2
built volume: 80'000 m3
situation
on the edge of the
village, close by the motorway's slip road
and neighbouring a residential area, a shopping centre should be built.
in addition to the coop supermarket a “diy” and
hobby store, a garden centre as well as further shops of tenants had to
be included in the planning process. the tenant's various demands had
to be considered in the project's concept.
the construction was planned as a one storey building together with
approximately 300 parkings. the neighbourhood's sensitivity concerning
the volume of traffic had to be taken into consideration in advance.
the general contractor in charge of the realisation was hrs.
solution
to satisfy all the needs
of surfaces on one floor an
extraordinary huge building had to be planned with a length of 150
meters. through the whole construction a central axis is spacially
established with the character of a classical mall. this axis serves at
the same time for the access of the sales area and for the customers'
orientation in the building. its glazed roof provides daylight for the
whole building. The arrangement of the shops has taken place at the
left and right hand side of the central axis whereas the supermarket
forms the ending over the building's entire breadth.
the architectural concept is concentrating on taking the bulky
appearance from the big building and on its integration in the delicate
surroundings.
on the building's front side the glass roof covering the axial area is
extended to a big canopy over the entrance. combined with a distinctive
vertical element which emphasises visually the entrance and the lateral
glass canopies the elevation is structured. this way the building
appears considerably lighter and more elegantly. all elements are not
only focusing an enhancement of the appearance but accomplish as well
different functions like e.g. the canopy is protecting the entrance
area of weather influences and therefore at the same time allows to use
outdoor surfaces for sale's purposes.
the entire elevation is covered by corrugated aluminium sheeting. to
optimally integrate the building in its environment it is kept in a
rusty colour which corresponds well with the earth colour of the
surrounding blocks of flats.
originally the upper part of the elevation was designed to have a band
of windows which would have provided additional daylight for the
building. by night this would have emphasised the canopy's pending
character. this measure was rejected by the client. as a compromise
instead of the windows anthracite coloured metal sheeting has been
chosen which structures the façade and emphasises the
lightness of the canopy.
the elevation's vertical order is being made by anthracite coloured
pillars, situated every 15 meters, in which the roof's drainage is
included.
the lateral elevation's length is interrupted additionally by the coop
restaurant's conservatory.
great importance was attached to the environmental design because of
the neighbourhood of residential buildings. green trellis are shielding
the building towards the residential quarter. Its green roof integrates
the shopping centre very well in its vicinities on the one hand and on
the other hand makes possible the retention of rain water which is
highly welcome considering as big constructed surfaces as this.
numerous trees along the building as well as on the parking arrange for
a smooth transition towards the residential quarter. furthermore,
specially on behalf of this project candelabra have been created, which
optically form a bridge between the construction and the external
space. meanwhile these newly designed luminaria have been successfully
installed also in other projects.
