situation
because of the successful
project process of stryker spine's
new building in la chaux-de-fonds (Switzerland), stryker osteosynthesis
too came up to mühlemann + partner for the design of a new
building's project. The site is situated east of the village centre,
directly at the main road connecting grenchen and solothurn. up to now
this land was used for agricultural purposes.
the client's aim is to realise a representative building, in which
administration, an auditorium for presentations and training as well as
operation theatres and production rooms are arranged. in addition to
this the independent division of stryker-swiss sales organisation
should be positioned in this building.
solution
inspired by the open field
a project was developed that
reminds in its airiness of a butterfly, which is alighting on a bloom.
the butterfly's lightness is carried on in the detailed architecture.
the glazed administration wing in a v-form is connected with the
production wing by a joint. the cafeteria and the auditorium for
presentations and training are located in this joint. storage and
arrival are contained in the production wing.
high attention was payed to the administration building's interior
design. a glazed floor allows a view on the operation theatres and the
cafeteria, which is in the basement. this transparency visualises the
company's philosophy on the one hand and on the other hand permits the
use of natural light. to screen from view horizontal blinds can be
attached if so needed.
all areas can be extended: the administration wing by a lateral
elongation as well as by the realisation of an additional storey. the
production surfaces can be axially tripled. A central axis keeps the
different parts of the building together. it serves as main transport
axis for persons, material and building services. this is shown to the
exterior by the roof system, which contains the whole building
services' distribution. the suspensions, distinctively, as well as
delicately seeming, enable the realisation of production rooms, with a
span width of 30 m, completely clear of any pillars. by this the
flexibility of the company organisation is enhanced. Without any
alteration efforts all operating procedures can be adapted to new
conditions at any time.
the access to the administration wing's main entrance will be
completely designed – like the whole surroundings. a big pond
in front of the main entrance and an extensive planting around the
building with a small wood in the east arrange for a beautiful
transition to the neighbouring areas. the extremely high visibility of
the big building complex at the village's access road was consciously
made use of to realise an image shaping construction for both the
community and the company.
the building complex' appearence was deliberately held in a similar
style like the one in la chaux-de-fonds. this above all considering the
choice of materials and the location of the building services'
distribution. the fix sun screen in the west was designed likewise for
functional reasons on the one hand and on the other hand for reasons of
recognition. in spite of this affinity the building develops an
independent character by its alignment on various utilisations.
